Spending other people’s money

I’ve always thought Bono was largely full of it. Today I am, irrevocably and forever, completely convinced of the fact. Bono has made a second career out of, in effect, telling other people (governments) how they should spend money which was acquired under coercion (taxation) from third parties (taxpayers). He calls it “aid”, […]

Living in the Cloud

This was sparked by two things: the MacBook Air (obviously) and Steven Frank’s blog post about living in the cloud.
I recall, when I bought my black MacBook a few years back, mentally shaking my fist at the sky and crying “Curse you Steve Jobs!!” as the camera crash-zoomed into my face. I was cursing Mr. […]

Politics of Trust

William Hague:
the case for the referendum rests above all on the need for the House and the Government to honour commitments solemnly given. How many times have each of us in the House toured schools and colleges saying to young people that they should take an interest in politics, that their vote makes a difference, […]

Mac Apps I Desperately Want on the iPhone

I have a core wish-list for iPhone apps and it goes like this:

SpamSieve
OmniFocus
Twitterrific
MarsEdit
Yojimbo
A proper PDF reader

My biggest unknown with the iPhone SDK so far is whether Apple are going to provide some access to the sync mechanism for third parties. I certainly hope so.
What are you waiting for?

MacBook Air as “big iPod”

I’ve gone through the three stages of Apple-announcement processing on the MacBook Air: lunatic enthusiasm, sticker shock and acceptance. I wanted to think out loud about this product and hear other people’s thoughts on it too. I don’t promise magnificent insight in what follows.
The first reaction I had, watching the keynote, was surprise […]

The BBC Will Decide on Apple

The BBC’s Rory Cellan-Jones wonders aloud:
We had a big row - or rather a reasoned debate - in our morning editorial meeting about whether Apple deserves quite as much coverage as it gets. A leading economics journalist pointed out that the Ford Focus is a much bigger seller than the iPhone - but gets much […]

Macworld Reflections

For me, the iPhone software update is the most exciting thing out of today’s Macworld keynote. The new features look very, very good but the iPod touch just became a seriously compelling product. I bet everyone who has one feels like Christmas just came again.
It will be interesting to see how well the […]

‘Twas the Night Before Macworld

Let me just say it: I have no idea what Apple will announce tomorrow. I don’t even have the necessary imagination to envisage what they might do. John Gruber’s pre-Macworld piece makes an interesting observation: that there’s little consensus around what’s expected.
Personally, I’m deeply sceptical of the subnotebook rumours. If there’s one […]

Remembering London

It’s back to work, back to the old clothes and the chores. It’s still dark all the time up here in Scotland - and when it’s not dark, it’s raining - so I’ve been going back through the 2007 archive and reworking some older images that maybe only got two stars the first time around.

Canon […]

Wishes for Aperture 2.0

I’ve seen a few Aperture 2.0 wish-lists on various blogs and I thought I would write mine down. As a disclaimer, I’ll say that I know nothing about any future version of Aperture. I don’t even know that they’re making one, but I think it’s safe to assume that they are.
I was under NDA […]
